The lights, the fun, the cheer, sweets, family – All these comes to our mind when we think of Diwali or Deepawali. Diwali is one of the most important festival in Hindu calendar. According to its mythological history, it is celebrated to welcome Lord Rama along with Sita and Laxman after the long 14 years of exile. As Rama killed demon Ravana who had evil mind and intentions, Diwali is also a festival of victory of good over evil.

Generally Diwali is celebrated between mid October to November depending on the hindu calendar dates. This year Diwali is on 13th. November, 2012.

It is a long festival of 5 days where each day signifies different reasons, seasons and festivity. The first day is called “Dhan Teras” where people worship goddess Laxmi (the goddess of money). Second day is called “Kali Chaudas”. On this day people worship Goddess Kali and wish for removal of all the evils from their lives. Third day is the most important day of this festival and called “Diwali”. On this day business people worship their account books and also worship lord Ganesha for betterment of business and life.

The next day is a new year according to Hindu calendar. On this day people exchange sweets and good wishes while welcoming the New Year with pure joy. Younger kids seek blessings from elders to have successful year ahead. The elders give their eternal good wishes along with sweets and some money. The last day of the celebration is called “Bhai Bij” or “Bhai Duj”. On this day brothers visit their sisters’ place and pray for her family’s well being and good health.

During Diwali, people light diyas around their home at the evening. It looks really beautiful. Kids play with fire crackers in the night and celebrate this festival in their own way.

When we are talking about the tremendous growth Gujarat is doing, when we see lot of multinational companies coming to Gujarat, when lot of job opportunities are opening up, when we see CM Narendra Modi taking Gujarat step forward every day, let’s not forget the effects on environment in Gujarat. According to a recent tree census, it has been revealed that standard ratio of trees per person is very very low in Ahmedabad. The typical ratio is 61 trees per person, whereas there are almost 10 persons supported by one tree currently in Ahmedabad. These are really dangerous figures especially when the sources of pollution are increasing at a rapid pace.

To overcome this problem, Ahmedabad Municipal Corporation (AMC) is going to launch two schemes in the city from this monsoon. ‘AMC Green Bond Scheme’ and ‘Own a Tree Concept’ are the two schemes which will allow Amdavadis to earn Rs. 150 and Rs. 250 respectively just by planting a new tree near their house.

So, here is the process that you need to follow to participate in this scheme:

Get registered with your civic body under this scheme before planting the sapling near your home.

At the time of registration, the civic body will issue green bond after verification of details.

The bond given to you can be redeemed after three (3) or five (5) years.

The only condition here is that the people need to plant such species that grow canopy on maturity such as neem, banyan, gulmahor, mango tree, borsali and peepal among others.

This initiative is taken by Mr. SK Langa, Deputy Municipal Commissioner of AMC’s garden department. It’s sad that AMC has to offer this incentive. After all its our own mother earth, and we don’t need incentives to save it. Let’s pledge that we will do our bit to save earth, otherwise the next generations will not be able to enjoy the beauty of earth.

Rath Yatra is one of the oldest and sacred hindu festival celebrated all over India. The word “Rath” means chariot or transport and “Yatra” means journey, so the actual meaning is Jouney in a decorated chariot. Rath Yatra is celebrated on Ashadh Shukla Dwitiya (second day in bright fortnight of Ashadh month) every year.

The festival celebrates Lord Krishna’s return to home. It is celebrated annually in the months of June or July (rainy season). Ratha Yatra was originated 5,000 years ago in India, on the East Coast state of Orrisa, in a city called Puri. It is celebrated with great joy in the city of Ahmedabad as well.Along with the main chariot of Lord Krishna, other decorated chariots and walking people joins the procession. Many “Akhadas” show their skills in front of visitors in Ahmedabad. Gujarat Chief Minister Shri Narendra Modi performed the ritual of cleaning the path of chariots. Shri Modi also pulled the chariot out of the temple premises of Jagannath temple in Jamalpur area of Ahmedabad.

Earlier it used to be communal riots on the occasion of Rath Yatra in Ahmedabad, but since last 11 years Ahmedabad has experienced a peaceful Rath Yatra. Even other communities like Muslim & Christian join the procession and welcome Rath Yatra whole heartedly.

Here is the route of Ahmedabad Rath Yatra for 2012:

Ahmedabad was called “Manchester of India”

Ahmedabad had become textile hub and was producing really good material for clothes, this was the reason it was called “Manchester of India”. In the year 1861 Ranchhodlal Chhotalal established his first textile mill called Shahpur mill and then there was no looking back. After the establishment of Shahpur mill, many other entrepreneurs like Maganbhai, Amabalal Sarabhai, Kasturbhai Lalbhai started their textile mills. As you know, the entrepreneurship runs in every Gujarat’s blood, the mill owners proved that correct.

After the establishment of many textile mills, Ahmedabad had become center for commercial and industrial houses. There were about 33 textile mills in Ahmedabad in the year 1905. Slowly and steadily textile industry boomed like anything. The title as “Manchester of India” was given to Ahmedabad by major industrialists Ambalal Sarabhai and Kasturbhai Lalbhai.

Today Ahmedabad is one of the fastest growing cities of India. It has been mentioned by Forbes magazine as one of the best cities to live in the world. Apart from textile industry, many other businesses have flourished from here. Dhirubhai Ambani (Reliance), Karsanbhai Patel (Nirma), Gautambhai Adani (Adani) are few of the names of some of the biggest industrialists of India who are or were based in Gujarat.

Today’s fact is shaking fact, well, jokes apart! Today we are going to learn about Shaking Minarets of Ahmedabad.

If you shake 1 minaret, the other shakes automatically after few seconds.

History of Jhulta Minar

Jhulta Minar is part of Sidi Bashir Mosque in Ahmedabad. The construction of mosque was completed in 1452. It is believed that this mosque was constructed by Sidi Bashir, a slave of Sultan Ahmed Shah who founded this city. There is another conflicting story regarding the construciton, which says that the mosque was built by Malik Sarang, a noble in the court of Muhammed Begada, another Sultan of Gujarat. The minarets are three stories tall with beautifully carved balconies.

It is a traditional example of marvelous craftsmanship and architecture. The mosque has been constructed in such a manner that, if you apply a little force on its upper arc, the Minar tends to sway. A minor shaking of either of the minaret results in the other minaret vibrating after a few seconds, though the connecting passage between them remains free of vibration. The reason is still unknown. You will not see this kind of construction anywhere in the world.

River Sabarmati used to flow from Manek Chowk earlier.

Really astonishing fact! Rivers change their path from time to time, but this is something amazing to know that it used to flow from Manek Chowk.

History of Manek Chowk!
Manek Chowk is named after the saint Baba Maneknath. It is said that in the 15th century, Baba Maneknath used to disrupt Sulatan Ahmed Shah’s efforts when he was trying to build a new capital here. It is really interesting story how he used to interrupt Sultan’s construction work.

Baba Maneknath used to weave a mat during the day time when the workers used to build the walls of fort, and then he would unstitch the mat at night, magically resulting in a fall of fort walls. Every morning workers used to build a wall and every night it would fall down.

When this was discovered by Sulatan Ahmed Shah, he called saint Baba Maneknath. Sultan told baba to prove his powers by putting himself in a small jar. Baba was really powerful and did as Sultan told him, after which Sultan sealed the jar and buried it deep down the soil.

Manek Chowk Now!
This open square (Chowk) is in the centre of the old city, which works differently for different time of the day. In the early morning, Manek Chowk is used as vegetable market. In the afternoon, it becomes jewellery market, which is considered to be the second largest jewellery market in India. In the evening after 8 o’clock, it is flooded with food stalls with different local street snacks and goodies. It is most famous for its food stalls, as people can have food here till 1:00 in the night. It is a nice hang out place where people can get verity of food.

From the towers of Jumma Masjid in Ahmedabad, the hills of Pavaghadh can be seen!

Isn’t it amazing! This not only shows the architectural genius but the relation of brotherhood between two religions. Here is some brief information on Jumma Masjid and Pavaghadh.

History of Jumma Masjid, Ahmedabad

Jumma Masjid also known as Jama Masjid in Ahmedabad is one of the oldest and the most beautiful mosques in India. It was built by founder of the city, Sultan Ahmed Shah in 1423 AD. Built from yellow sandstone, it has 260 beautifully carved pillars (Hindu and Jain tradition carving) and 15 domes. It is said that this monument symbolizes the astonishing mixture of Hindu and Muslim architecture styles.

It took 13 years to complete the construction of this mosque with a special touch given by the Sultan himself. It also has a tomb of the Sultan Ahmed Shah homage by his son Mohammed Shah II.

About Pavaghadh

A place of pilgrimage, Pavaghadh is very near to Vadodara.
